Research Background

My current research interest is focused on multimodality imaging of the infarcted myocardium and subsequent healing. In-vivo assessment of specific aspects of myocardial remodeling after ischemic injury can help to provide a more dynamic understanding of the healing myocardium and improve the monitoring and evaluation of novel therapy approach such as stem-cells. The major techniques used are Magnetic Resonance Imaging and optical imaging techniques as well as nuclear approaches. MRI yields excellent anatomic resolution and provides detailed information about cardiac function. Molecular MRI contrast agents, based on paramagnetic Gadolinium or superparamagnetic nanoparticles, can address specific targets in the injured myocardium such as extracellular matrix proteins and elastin fibers. Optical reporters can target proteolytic enzymes, immune cells such as monocytes and macrophages and surface proteins such as integrins or apoptosis markers.

While further development of in-vivo imaging approaches remains the central goal, the ex-vivo validation of the imaging signal is a crucial task to verify the cellular source of the in-vivo imaging signature. All projects carry a translational potential for clinical medicine.
